Prayer of Confession

Lord God, sometimes I feel so set in my ways. I’m not always ready to give something up to gain the thing of value that you promise.
Forgive me, Lord, as I open my heart to you.
Sometimes I just expect things on a plate, I’m not always ready to work for something that you call me to do.
Forgive me, Lord, as I open my heart to you.
Sometimes I take my eyes off you and feel so lost. Bring me back, please, Lord.
Forgive me, Lord, as I open my heart to you. Amen
Marvellous and mighty Lord, we are forever grateful for all the good gifts you give us, for eyes to see, for ears to hear, for a brain to understand, and a heart to love. We praise you, Lord, Amen

Message: What should we pray for?

Text: In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. Psalm 62:5 & 8

Martin Luther said, “Prayer is that mightiest of all weapons that created natures can wield.” We need to remember as A.W. Tozer points out, “God does not keep office hours.” B H Carroll said, “Our most lamentable ignorance is in regards to prayer.” T. T. Crabtree wrote, “If we knew the proper manner of effective praying and the proper things for which we should, and then if we would pray, life greatest difficulties would be solved.”

The story is told of a little girl and her mother. “Mummy,” asked the little girl, “are the weakest saints sitting on Satan’s knees?” The little girl’s mother said, “Nothing of the sort, child! Who told you the like of that?” “Well Mummy, I was listening in Church, and the minister said that: Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saints upon his knees’.” The mother went on to explain what the real meaning was. The enemy (Satan) does not like to see us praying. You see when we pray we are speaking to Almighty God, to whom every knee will bow.

We all need the guidance of the Holy Spirit as what we should pray for in order to help us not to be guilty of offering selfish prayers, even the apostle Paul gives expression to his difficulty at this point in the text.

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Heb.4:16)

The world we live in today is one that is going through a time of desperate need, even in our lives we will pass through such a valley when only God can help. It is good that we have a great High Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son who is both compassionate, approachable and one who has gone through here on earth all that we face from day to day. He has got the T shirt so goes the old saying.

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. (John 14:13-14)

Many people have been guilty of spiritual embezzlement because of our lack of knowledge in regard to the teaching of this passage of Scripture. All of us which includes me have been guilty of making a list of our wants and uttering them to God and closing with the phrase, “This we ask in Jesus name.” To pray “in Jesus name” means to offer the prayer that Christ would pray if he stood in our place, so that the Father may be glorified. Jesus is authorizing us to use his name for things which are needed to bring men and women to knowledge of the nature and character of God. Prayer has been described as a “company credit card” solely for use in the company business which is this case is to advance the Kingdom of God and not for selfish purposes. Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. (Col. 4:2-4)

When Christ was on earth he showed his concern for the physical needs of people as well as their spiritual welfare. The New Testament is full of the miracles he performed, the cleansing of the lepers, giving sight back to the blind, hearing to the deaf even giving back life to the son of a widowed mother.

So, we should pray that God will bless the efforts of doctors, nurses, medical staff, research scientists and all who give the ministry of healing.

We are encouraged to ask God the Father for wisdom, If any of you lack wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5) We can read all the books in a library attend the best university and yet lack wisdom. True wisdom is a gift from God.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10) Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. (Proverbs 4:7)

Lastly, but as important, we need to seek God’s forgiveness of our sins. There is not a day that any of us do not sin so we need God’s mercy. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1st John 1:8-9) We need to confess and turn our back on sin, to ask God’s forgiveness for sins known and unknown. We need to pray that others too would be encouraged to seek this salvation. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13) Have you called out to Him?

Dear Lord hear our prayer for those suffering with any form of illness at home or in hospital speedily restore them we pray in Jesus Name. Amen

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen
